Summary
Underneath Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni lies the world’s largest supply of lithium, presenting the country with both a potential opportunity, as well as the next line in a series of resource wars. The Democracy Center investigates the interests surrounding this subterranean wealth, and what Bolivian citizens are doing to ensure their land is not exploited. Drawn from more than three dozen interviews, with government officials, economic and technical experts, environmentalists, and members of the communities where the lithium resides, the report looks at the economic, environmental and social issues involved in Bolivia’s lithium plans.
